GEAR & EQUIPMENT

WHAT GEAR DOES MY RACER NEED?

Racers require the following MINIMUM equipment to ski race:

  • Skis, boots & poles.
Skis do not need to be race-specific or discipline-specific but, choose a carving ski (avoid wide, twin-tip, or park skis).

  • Good outerwear & layers
Weatherproof Pants, gloves, Baselayers, Goggles, and a neck warmer ensure racers stay warm. Most teams provide team jackets.

  • Hard-eared helmets are required
Helmets labeled as "FIS RH 2013" compliant (see example in the picture below.)
Racers wearing helmets without this sticker will not be allowed to race GS.
Several manufacturers offer "FIS RH 2013" compliant helmets - look for the sticker on the back.

MY RACER IS ADVANCING, WHAT OTHER GEAR SHOULD THEY HAVE?

As racers advance in skill and technique, they may benefit from having some additional race-specific equipment:

  • Dedicated GS and Slalom skis (one of each)

  • Slalom protective gear - Chin Guard, Shin Guards, Pole Guards

  • A Race Suit

  • Zip-off ski pants

  • Ski Boot Bag for carrying gear and clothing

Keep in mind much of these items can be found gently used at ski swaps or in past-season colors at a discount. Several local shops offer racer discounts, so be sure to ask. Keep safety in mind as you never want to purchase dated equipment (such as skis and bindings or helmets) that may compromise your racer in the event of a crash.
